What is Mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is safe and effective medical procedure pioneered by a French physician, Dr. Michael Pistor. Mesotherapy involves a non-surgical medical technique that utilizes combinations of customized mixtures of natural medications that include vitamins, plant extracts, homeopathics and amino acids that aid in weight loss, treatment of cellulite, and skin rejuvenation.
One of the main medications is phosphatidyl choline, which is a derivative of soy lecithin. This ingredient is commonly used by many physicians worldwide in the treatment of fatty plaques in the arteries with the exception that the treatment is administered intravenously. Similar mechanisms exist in both the mesotherapy and fatty plaque removal therapy, however the location of the fat is different. Another ingredient is L-carnitine, which is used to transport fat into and out of the cell for energy production purposes. Many have taken L-carnitine as a supplement orally in order to try and lose weight; it is much more effective when injected into the site of the fatty region.
Mesotherapy’s procedure involves injection with very small needles into the areas of fat. Common areas of injection include the abdomen, thighs, hips and buttock region whereby roughly one tenth to two tenths of the medication are injected per square 1-2 cm. The effect of the medication is to cause localized fat shrinkage that can be visible within as little as 3-4 treatments.
People who respond most readily are those patients that have localized fat such as the love handles, saddle bags or cellulite over the thigh, however from my clinical experience systemic weight loss does occur in most individuals who have localized treatments with Mesotherapy since the treatment promotes healing to the by through increasing circulatory, lymphatic, immune system responses as well as removal of fat from surrounding fat cells.
How often do I receive Mesotherapy treatments?
Generally, the average patient requires eight to ten treatments. The number of Mesotherapy treatments depend on the size of the individual being treated, the number of body areas needing to be treated, and the how long the patient has had the excess fatty deposits. Mesotherapy treatments should be spaced-out every one to two weeks.
When can I expect to see the results of the Mesotherapy?
Generally, results can be seen in most patients in as little as 2-3 treatments and the results obtained with Mesotherapy are dramatic. After completing a customized series of Mesotherapy treatments over a three month period, patients can notice improvement in skin quality, less dimpling of the skin, and weight reduction. Weight reduction can be approximately ten pounds on average as well as up to two clothing size reduction.
How many treatments are required before I see results?
It depends on the patient's body. Some patients see results after one treatment, while others may require four to five treatments to begin to see results. Again, since Mesotherapy works systemically, one can notice a huge improvement in overall weight loss and loss of inches around site of treatment.
Is Mesotherapy for Everyone?
Mesotherapy therapy is suited for most people between the ages of 18 and 75. These individuals should be in overall good health prior to the treatment. Various side effects and contraindications may apply to certain patients with advanced disease or bleeding disorders.
Is Mesotherapy Safe?
Mesotherapy is extremely safe and effective and most people are good candidates for this form of therapy. Your Naturopathic doctor will evaluate your medical history and current state of health utilizing state of the art diagnostic tools and evaluation techniques.
Side effects are generally limited to bruising, a burning sensation post treatment, itching and swelling. The bruising and swelling usually fades within one to two weeks post treatment.
Can I go back to work or resume normal activity after the treatment?
Yes. The procedure generally takes 30 minutes and requires no preparation or recovery time. However, I do recommend that one rest for at least three days in terms of physical activity. No heavy bandages or girdles are used or required.
Are the treatments painful?
The majority of patients experience minimal discomfort with Mesotherapy. A pinching and burning sensation may be felt during a treatment depending on the treatment area; sensitivity can range for those with lower pain thresholds, a numbing cream or painkillers can be used in special circumstances, however this is not recommended due to its potential interference in effectiveness of treatment.
How long do the benefits last?
Treatment areas will remain free of unwanted fat along with maintenance of a healthy diet and exercise regime. Your Naturopathic doctor will help customize a healthy program for you involving a blood food allergy assessment and cutting edge diagnostic tools to be able to assess fat loss, muscle mass and health and integrity of the cells in your body. Dietary and lifestyle recommendations will be made and custom tailored for your body’s needs. Treatments for cellulite and excess fat may require maintenance on a six month to one year basis.
Mesotherapy for Cellulite
The medical term for cellulite is liposclerosis/lipoedema. Cellulite is a skin condition affecting over 70% of women. The skin on an individual with cellulite appears lumpy and dimpled appearance. Cellulite commonly appears on the hips, buttocks and legs.
How does Mesotherapy get rid of Cellulite?
In order to understand how Mesotherapy reduces cellulite, one must understand what cellulite is. Cellulite appears in the subcutaneous level of the skin whereby fat cells are arranged in chambers surrounded by connective tissue called septae. Cellulite occurs when the fat cells expand and stretch the connective tissue causing it to eventually harden causing non-flexible length. Surrounding tissue continues to expand with weight or water gain. This results in areas of the skin being held down while other sections bulge outward giving the lumpy appearance. Mesotherapy benefits individuals who have cellulite by enabling drainage of excess fluid from the fat cell and improve blood flow to the area and lymphatic drainage of the excess dissolved fat deposits, removing fibrotic and hardened connective tissue.
Mesotherapy for Body Shaping
It is possible to get rid of fat without having an invasive procedure, the answer is Mesotherapy. Microinjections of customized "fat burning" formula are administered to areas such as (love handles, arm flaps, bra bulge, inner thighs, buttocks, saddlebags, etc.) A series of treatments (3-10) are given spaced two to four weeks apart. Results are permanent and have extraordinary affects as long as the patient adheres to a proper diet and exercise regimen. Occasional touch-ups may be required.

Is Mesotherapy different from liposuction?
Yes, it is very different. There is no anesthesia and surgical risk and mesotherapy requires no recovery time. Mesotherapy also removes the fat from the fat cell without destroying it as in the case of liposuction.
