Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive system of health care developed in China over the last 4000 years. It is a system that has proven to be clinically effective for a variety of health conditions. The past few decades have brought much new research into the applications of TCM and acupuncture. Modern TCM and acupuncture integrates empirical traditional wisdom with up-to-date medical knowledge. TCM focuses on the body as a whole to bring about balance and harmony to the body, mind and spirit.

Acupuncture can be applied in a number of different styles depending on the disease or condition being treated. For pain syndromes such as back/neck pain, headaches, and tendonitis, we use a technique called Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS). IMS involves the insertion of acupuncture needles into the body where muscles have shortened or contracted, or at points where nerves meet muscles. It is problems at these points that are often at the root of a pain condition. For other conditions, assessment is made clinically and then using TCM meridian theory we select points accordingly. TCM meridian theory considers the relationship between internal organ systems and the nervous system. The nerves that exist within, and just below the skin’s surface connect to internal organs via ‘reflex arcs’.  Acupuncture points are specific points on the skin’s surface that are stimulated using fine needles to influence the nervous system. Correspondingly, this stimulation then influences the function of the internal organs. Applied in this way, acupuncture is used for a wide variety of health conditions. A typical acupuncture session takes about 45 minutes and is often accompanied by massage or ultrasound treatments.

The World Health Organization has officially recognized acupuncture as a treatment for a number of medical conditions including: sciatica/low back pain, headache & migraine, frozen shoulder & tennis elbow, common colds, asthma, gastric disorders and infertility.
